Role Shift of Corner

In the past, L-shaped tables were used largely due to the fact that the extra depth of the corner of the work surfaces could accommodate the depth of the bulky desktop computer.  With the introduction of slimmer computer screens and articulated monitor arms, L-shaped table tops were gradually replaced by linear bench tables. However, the above furniture arrangement paid little attention to the need of human behavior at the contemporary workplace such as interaction and collaborations among fellow workers. People nowadays do not go into offices simply to work at their own desk but more for social networking, brainstorming and team working. The furniture that better supports such work style could be not a L-shape table but a L-shaped sofa with a low or standard table. The 45-degree angle between the two people sitting next to each other across the table edge allow them to remain eye contact without direct staring. At the same time, they may easily share view on the same laptop or have an online meeting together with a proper background.

The worksurface and seating configuration at work has been completely reversed as the design focus of office furniture has been shifted from supporting equipment to supporting people’s social interaction.
